We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.
- Buddha (563 BC-483 BC) Founder of Buddhism.
As I write this article, thoughts are surfing my mind as ocean weaves surf sandy beaches. Life has evolved as an incredible journey of moments turning into days and years of memoir.
I arrived in this great nation, the United States of America, seventeen years ago. It was a day I still remember filled with a booze of emotions. It was the first time I have had courage to leave my home where I grew up.
When I reflect upon these years that have gone, I realize that I’ve performed on the life stage, akin to an actor, dealing with ken of emotions - anger, exasperation, happiness, sorrow, despair to name a few. I’ve become matured, more humble and certainly grateful for the journey that has taught me lessons that are worth sharing with you.
Thought # 1: I’m a reflection of my own perception:
My life is nothing more or less than the thoughts I choose to have. I’d heard that I wouldn’t be able to make it as I was feeble, I lacked aggressiveness to succeed, and I had never proven my worth before. In reality, these negative comments built my desire to succeed no matter what surprise dared to show its ugly head. My inner voice got stronger as I heard the outer outcry of my feebleness to start and succeed in life on my own.
When weather gets rough, when wind blows hard, when the storm is inevitable, we seek shelter in our own cozy home. Inside, we do not know the harshness that exists outside. We control the warmth of the room, and we certainly control the perception of the reality in our own mind regardless of how it exists outside. I’m happy that I did not allow the storm to damage my courage, I did not allow wind to blow my dreams. I can change my life by changing my own perception.
Thought # 2: Life is simple:
When I flew years ago from the east to the west, I was excited to begin a new life and achieve abundance of material wealth. I was determined to silence those comments of my lack of aggressiveness to succeed. I’m happy that I’ve silenced those voices of opposition. However, I had to deal with another voice of opposition. It was my own voice from within. As I cumulated material abundance, I succeeded in transmuting my desire to elevate my esteem for those who wondered if I can ever achieve anything meaningful in life. Life is more about inner growth than the growth of material possessions. I now realize that growing my spiritual being is as vital as growing wealth. I do not need wealth to be possessed by the possessions that create fake happiness, I need wealth to grow my spiritual being and to make difference in this world. I do not need but basic necessities to live life of abundance with simplicity to feel eternal happiness. I need wealth to have freedom to act on causes of humanity and to make this world a better place to live.
We are what we think. All that we are arises With our thoughts. With our thoughts, We make our world.
- Buddha (563 BC-483 BC) Founder of Buddhism.
Thought # 3: I’m one of a kind:
For most of my life, I’ve had fallen into a hapless trap of an identity crisis. I always wanted to be someone else. An effort to find myself in someone else’s identity took me to the lowest altitude of self worth. I’m born to be who I am, a unique individual with a unique life. By investing my faith in who I am, my thoughts started hovering on a higher altitude. I started seeing life from a higher elevation. I realized that I’m not born to be competitive, I’m born to be creative. Life offers abundance to those who clear weeds of competition and harvest seeds of creativity. Self esteem and self love are intertwined. By loving myself, I’m becoming compassionate towards others who seek my time and support. Only I can be myself as no one ever has and no one ever will be qualified for the job.
Thought # 4: I can’t control the wind, but I can adjust the sails:
I’ve had my share of failures. In the past when I failed, I banished courage to learn and improve. I had allowed fear of failure to hijack my ideas to the point that I became victim of my own self-pity. One day I met with a guy born with physical disability to have courage and dream to become a wrestler. He spoke at length about his dream. That one conversation changed my life. I started focusing more on the positive experience from everything that I do than on the negative outcome to judge my success. I have learned to adjust the sails when wind blows hard rather than to complain about the wind that I can’t control. Life has given me new meaning ever since.
Thought # 5: Thoughts are things:
This is incredibly powerful revelation. When I was young, I seldom thought about the words I spoke, I seldom thought about the thoughts I harbored. It was a life of ignorance. I’m a sum total of words that I speak and actions I take daily. If I speak words of animosity, anger and hatred, I become a bee hive of those emotional bees. I now have learned to appreciate pleasures of simple things - to wake up with a smile, to watch birds fly, to sense the beauty of the nature. By doing so, I look forward to a new dawn awaiting for a life of abundance.
For me life is not a mystery - it is a simple riddle, a beautiful journey, a marvelous song. Is it for you?
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind.

Hello Shilpan,
I share similar empowering thoughts. My life has changed much since having a breakthrough in my limiting beliefs. It’s great that we are all on the same journey, to spread this message.
Thanks!

Lovely thoughts, Shilpan. Its simple. Life is as we are and the unique way we respond to circumstances. For me, these are important for understanding. But #4 is the most important for doing…

All 5 points are very valid. I think it takes us a good deal of time to become comfortable with ourselves as we are. Hopefully we have set high standards of thought and behaviour. After much study, I figured out that I was the most important person that I needed to impress in my life. Realizing that imperfection is perfectly O K, I found peace with myself and others. Susan
Hi Shilpan - I think what you are saying is very true, and beautifully and insightfully put - and it’s always nice to hear a personal story - thanks!

It takes courage to leave what is familiar, what you think you know. At the same time, it has been said that it seems necessary to lose everything to gain everything. As you learn to detach from what you believe to be important, you begin to realize you are blinded from seeing the truth. Some people move to different geographic places without raising their own awareness. You can change how you think wherever you are, but you first need to realize beliefs determine feelings and everything about how you live now.

I really like this punchy line -
“We don’t see the things the way they are. We see things the way WE are.”

@Daniel -
I’m impressed that at such a young age, you have shown remarkable maturity. That’s worth a praise.
@Evelyn -
I can’t agree with you more. We are certainly together in this journey. I’ve never had such an intense desire to share my life lessons before.
@Davidya -
True. I was engaged in self-pity for a while until the experience of talking with someone who did not allow his dream to die just because he was handicap. That’s the way we all should take on life challenges.
@ Susan -
You possess lots of wisdom. I’m thankful for your comments as it adds new meaning to my writing. If we love ourselves, we can win half the battle before it begins in our mind.
@Robin -
As always, thank you for the kind words.

Hi Shilpan,
RE: #3. We all are unique. How boring this world would be if we were the same. It’s in our uniqueness that we can be the light for some, the shoulder for others, and soft place to land to our loved ones.
That’s one thing I like about blogs. They’re all different and reflect the views and beliefs of the author. What a joy it is to meet so many unique personalities.
Great post with five great points.

Completely agree. I used to look up to others too and tried to be “like them”. It’s one of the wisdoms that I gained after turning 30… just be me.
Thank you for another insightful post!

Life is simple when we can just live in the moment. I was typing an email to my boss the other day and I had all these thoughts on what he was going to think. I stopped this useless thinking and just wrote the best way I knew how.
However he was going to take it was up to him. I couldn’t predict his feelings. All I could do was do my best and then let it go.

Many times I had thought as to why we are all not of same color, religion etc to avoid all of these animosity that exists in the world but then I realize that when I walk in a beautiful garden, it looks beautiful because of the diversity that we see in different flowers and their color. How boring it would be to walk in a garden full of same color and type of flowers everywhere?
@Micheal -
Thanks for the kind words.
@Karl -
Living in the moment with the faith and focus to put best of our efforts is the key to gaining confidence when fear keeps pounding our mind.
Thanks

@Vered -
I’ve been obsessed with idolizing others to mold myself into someone I’m not. When I realized the value of self worth, my life has changed forever.
Thanks

It’s wonderful to read about your life journey and the thoughts and wisdom that you have found through the years. The most amazing thing is: The points (all of them) resonate so closely with my life journey. You will know what I mean when you read a post and found someone writing thoughts that identify so closely with your heart. That makes another great day!
Thanks for the great post!

Shilpan,
Those people who told you that you were too weak to succeed actually did you a favor. They motivated you to prove them wrong.
I really believe that everything that happens to us in life, good or bad, is a learning opportunity if we take the time to decipher the lesson. We can wallow in our hurts or misfortunes or we can learn from them and make use of our new knowledge as we move forward. Sounds like you have done just that!
“I can’t control the wind, but I can adjust the sails.”
How true! There are mnay things that come to our lives that we can’t control, but it’s how we deal with these things that determine the outcome or the course of our life ship.
I always apply this when it comes to raising my children. And the great thing is that since I know that I can’t control everything, I am able to adjust to their needs and not my wants.
Chris’s last blog post..Drive-Thru Kids: Hold The Tantrum Please
Shilpan, have you been reading Success Magazine? I have been reading an article in the most recent issue by Jim Rohn where he talks about setting your sail. I love that truth from this point.
Your writing just gets better and better. I love this post. I love thought number one. We are what we think about. We act out of what we think about. So profound. We all do it whether we realize it or not. The problem is that most people don’t realize it. I’m going to use your sentence “I can change my life by changing my own perception.” as my quote of the week. I’ll give you credit of course.

@Lori-
Thanks for the kind words. Those words of criticism indeed inspired me to prove my worth and every time I felt exasperated to call the day and to go back home as I used to get nostalgic, my mother reminded me as to why I came to USA in the first place.
@Chris -
I really like these words, “since I know that I can’t control everything, I am able to adjust to their needs and not my wants.” - I’m now learning this wisdom as my daughters are teenagers and they certainly have different needs than my wants. Thanks for reminding me that.
@Jennifer -
Thank you for the encouragement. I’m glad to hear that I’m getting better as I write more. I’m grateful for all that you’ve done and keep doing for me.
Shilpan
Shilpan: It’s interesting that others told you that you were feable. The way that you express yourself in your writings you come across as someone who is very confident. Unfortunately when you’re very young you haven’t yet developed the ability to listen to what others say and discard the meaningless put-downs. Children who have an adult who can teach them the kinds of things that you write in this post are very fortunate.
Marelisa’s last blog post..Share the Love Friday at Marelisa Online - Abundance Blog
Dear Shilpan
In my search for the truth, I happened to read something. According to it the only path to liberation is truth and the truth is, “YOU WILL HAVE TO GIVE UP THE HOPE THAT THE PAST COULD BE ANY DIFFERENT “.
Well although it seems like destiny has pre-defined plans for all of us, we do seem to yield the power of choice - that ultimately shapes our present karma and way forward. The forces around us shape the environment and sometimes to the extent of our thinking patterns but its upto us - we human yield the ultimate power of doing thinks differently and bringing in change. Life always teaches us lessons in some way or the other.

*smile* Shilpan you write so beautifully and I was really inspired by this post today. I took a moment and thought about each of the 5 steps you listed and it made me feel peace.
Why?
Because in this quest for a better life, I find writers like you who have experienced what these bits of wisdom has done for you and witnessing it to the interested reader - sharing the positive impacts
I really loved this and plan to read it again in the future. *smile*

I was in fact feeble. I was raised in an environment that cuddled me in early years. After my brother’s death, my parents wanted to find their happiness in allowing me to do whatever. So, I was not as matured as I should have been. Nonetheless, I’m happy so far for where I am today.
@Suprateep -
What a wisdom my friend. There are profound words of wisdom, “The forces around us shape the environment and sometimes to the extent of our thinking patterns but its upto us - we human yield the ultimate power of doing thinks differently and bringing in change. Thank you both for the insightful comment.

Another great post. Thanks for sharing your story. I would have written sooner, but I managed to lose connection to my blog at Transforming Stress today, and it took awhile to recover. Adversity does happen, and it can make us stronger and wiser.

This reminded me of a thought I had today — life can change faster than we do, if we don’t live in the moment.
Today, when I went to work, I forced myself to act as if it was my first day on the job. There was no yesterday. There was just today. It was interesting to experience first impressions of people I had known for so long. It gave me a new vantage point. I had a new lens to see what to hold on to, and what to let go.
I was surprised by how much novelty I could enjoy, simply by narrowing my focus to the immediate experience.

Thank you. This really helped.
Shilpan,
I have always been of the belief that we become what we think about most of the time. I dealt with the issue of thought years ago and ever since, I have been able to do a lot of things that people still marvel at.
I am a Nigerian based in Lagos, the former capital and it has been my desire to inspire people all over the world since I was much younger. Then it was not possible but I never thought I won’t be able to do it.
Now the whole world is reading my articles and books. I could have let you know a lot of things that my thinking has done for me, but time and space won’t allow me
You are GREAT man and I hope we will be best of pals
