Nothing can seem foul to those who win.
-William Shakespeare (1564-1616) British poet and playwright.
I’ve known many people from all walks of life. They have different ethnicity, religion and, of course, different culture. Nonetheless, in a simplistic view, I’d like to classify people into two groups: Whiners and Winners.
Whiners are those who are enamored with jealousy of achievers, dream fake dreams, who are hooked up on “cable-drug,” and are envy of celebrities, who are the slave to emotional instant gratification. They find everyone but themselves responsible for where they are in life.
Winners are those who understand their inner self. They’ve found purpose in their life, and they sacrifice the self fulfilling pleasures of the moment in search of eternal happiness that radiates their lives and others whom they care for.
Obviously, I like to surround myself with winners. I know that my destiny is being shaped by the company I keep. With the focus on being associated with the winners, I’ve started watching people when I come in their contact and infer if the person is a whiner or a winner.
I’ve drawn five distinct ways to identify a whiner to avoid and winner to embrace. After all, We become what our thoughts inspire us to and with a company of a whiner, success remains a mirage.
1. A victim of circumstances OR a victor of circumstances.
Whiners blame their lack of achievement in life to their circumstances. “I am not fortunate to have success,” or “I always get bad luck,” or “Money makes money” are few rumblings that you hear from a whiner. Their mind is cluttered with thoughts of despair. They’ve lost the battle in their own mind before it began in reality. I swiftly move on to salvage my sacred mind when I hear these words. Winners are victors in their own mind regardless of circumstances. It’s their will power to achieve and immense focus on their desire that overcomes any challenges they face to achieve goals.
2. They never act to avoid failure OR they never fail to avoid success.
When I began my career, I used to get exuberant while toying with new business ideas. In matter of days, I had no passion for those ideas that thrilled my spine just days ago. What happened ? I was fostering parallel thoughts of fear while dreaming to give fake comfort for the lack of desire and courage to take action. It was making “feel good” act of self sabotage. Soon, I realized that I had to change my thinking to change my life for the better. I was a whiner. The alchemy of my thoughts began to change my belief that to succeed, I shall never fail to act and let the universe provide courage to defeat my own fear.
The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
-Winston Churchill (1874-1965) British politician.
3. Are there lack of OR abundance of opportunities ?
I’ve had interesting conversation with few of my close friends in New Jersey few days ago. First friend had nothing but complaints about the world. “We’ve seen our best days,” or “I wanted to invest in rental properties, but it will be a while before I can take risk,” or “Stock market is about to crash with the worries of inflation” and so forth. I suppose you get the cue. He is a whiner. I hung up and few minutes later my phone rang. Hesitantly, I picked up the phone with all thoughts rushing my mind to avoid further destruction of my brain. To my relief, this was another friend who lived just few miles from the first caller. He called me to get advice on best ways to embark on his dream of real estate investment. “I believe that we can’t ask for any better time, Shilpan” he said. Why ? I was still in chaos. “Interest rates are low and prices are historically low as well. What’s your opinion?” Now he turned my dead brain around. He certainly is a winner.
4. They hate failures, OR they love failures.
This is a classic one. We all have fear of failure. This fear stems from the desire to be seen with respect in the eyes of others who have no interest whatsoever in our dreams. It’s a creature of self prophecy that harbors fake belief that to uplift our self esteem, we shall never falter in our endeavors. Thomas Edison once said that success is 90% perseverance and 10% genius. He failed 1000 times before inventing an electric bulb. He would have quit long before trying 1000 times if he cared for what others may think of his failures. He was a winner.
5. They are being managed by the time OR they manage the time.
Time truly has no value. I’ve heard from whiners that they do not have time for the exercise, or they do not have time to read or they do not have time to learn new skills. They forget that no one is selling time in free markets. It’s available in abundance as freely as air. What whiners complain about is their lack of focus and intention to allocate time for what they whine about. Winners on the other hand learn how to allocate time for what they consider priority in their lives.
The excess of our youth are checks written against our age and they are payable with interest thirty years later.
-Charles Caleb Colton (1780-1832) British clergyman, sportsman and author.
To Your Success,

Shilpan,
I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. It is so important to know the difference between the two. There are always two ways to look at an event. You can either say, “Oh I can’t believe that just happened….that is so terrible.” Or you can look at something bad as a way to learn and as an opportunity for the future. The ones who learn from bad circumstances are the ones that find success. They don’t let success find them.

I’m with you man. I try to surround my self with winners. Unfortunately, my own mother, and both of my sisters are whiners. It really pains me to avoid them sometimes because I know that they will exude negative aura.

Isn’t it amazing that two people with same opportunity will view them in entirely different perspective based on the thoughts they’ve developed over the time. Whiners should blame no one but themselves for their demise.
@Chris -
You’ve got that right. I have a friend of mine who never says a single positive thing about his life yet he lives same miserable life thinking he is the only one who has wisdom and rest of us a lagoons.
Thanks

Oh, I SO hope I’m a winner.
I think I am. Most of the time.
But sometimes I whine. And complain. And miss out on opportunities.
Thank you for this post. It is an important reminder for me!

I love this. I so used to be a whiner with no idea I had a choice to be a winner. It was so liberating realizing I had a choice.
I have to share this story that will add to the discussion. My husband, who is a major overacheiver, was just telling the story of his little league baseball days. When he first started playing he never hit the ball because he never swung the bat because he was afraid of failing - of not hitting the ball. When he got over that, he consistently hit the ball EVERY TIME because he got over his fear of failing.

Wow! Now, he is inspiration to me. I always thought that we are who we wanted to be. It’s not what we have or lack of, it’s our sheer determination and fiery determination to win over the fear shapes our destiny. Thanks for sharing such an uplifting story. I am sure that we can all learn from that.

Shilpan,
I love the Churchill quote! Some of us are natural optimists and some of us are not. For me, it is a daily battle to maintain that positive attitude, but I fight valiantly every day. I may be a born pessimist, but I don’t have to stay that way!
Shilpan,
What a great post, and a reminder to stay positive.
I think if we can look at challenges in life as opportunities to learn, (instead of as a “problem”), we’re much better off.
With regard to time, I “make” time for that which is important to me. It’s all about setting priorities.

I also love Churchill quote. He was a natural leader. I agree with you that all of us have pessimistic views time to time. That’s why I try to affirm myself when I sag into the negativity. I love your candid opinion.
@Barbara
What you said is so true in life. Glass can be seen as half empty by a whiner and half full by
a winner. Thanks for taking time to comment. You have inspired me to write content with purpose and focus.
Thanks

Law of attraction hits again.
Did you read JD’s on Stephen Covey?
http://blogs.msdn.com/jmeier/archive/2008/04/04/stephen-covey-at-microRoft.aspx
Covey talked about victimism there. I liked the term a lot. He showed few anti-patterns that lead to become one.
I recently finished reading Raving Fans book
http://www.amazon.com/Raving-Fans-Revolutionary-Approach-Customer/dp/0688123163
and I am planning to write tons of posts about it. One phrase i loved most. In the book they talked about Ducks and Eagles. “Duck quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd”.
WRT to fear to fear of failure. I’ve been there. Not anymore. I am motivated by failure. Failure never drains my energy any more.

Shilpan, this observance was “right on” with me. I am amazed at how people paralyze themselves with negative thoughts. I am lucky that starting with my parents and teachers, I was taught that I could do anything I set my mind to and prepared myself to do. Luckily I listened to them. I have had plenty of negative people cross my path in life and try to convince me that my ideas “won’t work” for whatever reason. I am very careful to surround myself with positive “winners”. Whatever we look for–we find.
@Alik
I agree with you about victimism metaphor. Most whiner feel good about being taken care of by their government of feel entitled to have things handed to them without efforts because they think life has treated them unfairly. In reality, they have treated their own lives unfairly. Good points.
@Susan
It’s good to see your comments. You are right about these folks with negative vibe. I call them toxin influence. We shall always look out for those who can potentially kill our dreams. Great points.

You have an art of taking the abstract and summarizing it very clearly. Thank you.
You may be interested in reading my summary of perspectives:
http://in2deep.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/perspectives-overview/
In this case, Whinner is the Tribal perspective, when we are strongly relating to our peers and what others think. Whiners call on the negative side of this stage of growth. As we step into self-responsibility, we step into what you call Winner, or the Special perspective. (I didn’t give it a name on the post) This stage allows us to begin to what Mazlow calls self actualization and become a Seeker, the more spiritual side of Winner. Winning per se becomes less important and we start to shift towards being. This opens the stage for Waking. And it continues up from there.
What you describe is a key bit of clarity many need to step out of their boxes.

Shilpan,
Since you commented on my blog I thought I’d come and see your blog too.
I really like this article, particularly your idea about being addicted to the thrill of dreaming rather than actually getting on and doing something.
I wonder if there is a whiner and a winner inside all of us - and the important thing is learning which voice to listen to.
I like your blog too, and I’ve subscribed, so expect to hear more from me!

Great article, I enjoyed reading it very much. It is certainly a good reminder that life is much more enjoyable and our goals are more obtainable when we are positive and enthusiastic. I am going to try and get my husband to read this. I think a little bit of positive thinking and a little less negativity would do him worlds of good.
